The original Resident Evil 4, released back in 2005, is considered by most fans to be the best RE game of all-time, and one of the best games of all-time in general in the minds of many gamers (I would agree). Since it was a masterpiece already, the remake doesn’t veer too far from the original, unlike the RE2 and RE3 remakes.
If you’re curious about some of the differences…
If you loved the original, I’m certain you’ll enjoy the remake. It’s very faithful, while also bringing a few fresh takes and twists, along with overhauled graphics, animation, sound, and controls (as one would expect).
I would say the best improvement overall, is that it leans much more heavily into a horror theme as opposed to the criticism that the original received for being too action-focused.
A second-best improvement for me personally, the knife play. I’ve always wanted there to be better knife play in an RE game, where in all the previous games it just felt like the knife was so pointless to use, just leading you to getting killed. This time, the knife can be upgraded and plays a major role in fighting and strategy.
Modern RE games have dialed back the difficulty level quite a bit, so going with “Normal” will simply not offer enough of a challenge for seasoned gamers. I played Village on “Normal,” and it was just too easy. I played on “Hardcore” for RE4 and it offered a satisfying challenge, making it all-around more rewarding to defeat enemies.
